In the classic contest, the spinning top is carefully scooped up while still turning and lifted onto a wooden post, where it is left to spin on. A well-made top thrown by a skilled hand can keep going for a long time, and the longest spinner wins.
Strength launches it, but skill is what keeps it spinning.
Tied to the rice year
Traditionally, gasing belonged to the rhythm of farming life. The big spinning sessions came after the rice harvest, when the hard work in the fields was done and the village had time to gather. The game was a way to mark the season, bring people together and settle a friendly rivalry, woven into the year rather than set apart from it.
