Best time

Late afternoon into early evening during the dry season (roughly February to September). Performances often pause during the monsoon months, so check current showtimes locally before you come.

Kito (we) like to say you do not really hear Kelantan until you hear it here. Gelanggang Seni is the state cultural centre in Kota Bharu, an open arena where the old arts are kept alive and performed rather than shut behind glass. On a good evening the air fills with the deep pulse of the rebana drums before you even find a seat.

The programme moves through the heart of Kelantanese tradition. Dikir barat, that call-and-answer group singing where one side teases and the other replies, gets the whole crowd swaying. Wayang kulit, our respected shadow-puppet theatre, is performed with a lamp, a screen and a master storyteller, a craft passed down with great care. Add silat, the unhurried martial art, gasing top-spinning that can hum for ages, and you have a real night out.

Daytime is gentler. You may catch wau makers fussing over a giant kite, or drummers rehearsing in the shade. It is a fine time to kkecek (chat) with the artisans, who are usually happy to explain what they are doing if you ask kindly.

A word demo (they, the locals) will tell you too. The arts here breathe with the seasons. Many performances rest during the monsoon and pick up again in the drier months, so treat any timetable as a guide and confirm the current showtimes before you set your heart on a particular night.

Good to know

What can we actually see at Gelanggang Seni?

On a full programme you might catch dikir barat group singing, wayang kulit shadow play, silat, gasing top-spinning, rebana drumming and wau (giant kite) displays. Not every art runs every day, so ask which is scheduled when you arrive.

When are the performances?

Showtimes are seasonal and tend to run in the drier months, often paused during the monsoon. We never trust an old timetable. Confirm the current schedule with the venue or the state tourism office before you plan your evening.

Is it suitable for children and is there an entry fee?

Yes, it is a family place and little ones usually love the drums and the spinning tops. Entry arrangements can change, so check on the day. Modest dress keeps everyone comfortable.
