Old town Kota Bharu, around Padang Merdeka
Early morning, when it is cool and the central market is at its liveliest. Start before the midday heat, and note that some sites and stalls quiet down around Friday prayers.
Some towns you drive. Kota Bharu’s old heart you jjalan (stroll). Kito (we) love sending guests out on foot here because everything that matters sits within an easy morning’s walk, and you meet the town properly along the way.
Start at Padang Merdeka, the open green where Kota Bharu’s story is told. Around it cluster the royal and heritage museums, the old istana buildings and galleries that hold Kelantan’s memory. Step in where you can, but check which are open that day, as days and entry can change.
From there, let your nose lead you to the central market, Pasar Siti Khadijah, rising in tiers of colour. This is where the town does its real kkecek (chatter). Upstairs and around it you will find fruit, kuih, spices and the easy bustle of traders who have stood there for years. A short stroll on brings the Buluh Kubu bazaar, good for batik, songket trims and small gifts to carry home.
There is no fixed route and that is the charm. Walk early before the heat, dress modestly, and build in a pause for prayers, the old town has mosques close at hand. When the sun climbs, you will have seen the royal past and the living present of Kota Bharu in one gentle morning. Confirm any specific museum hours locally, as they do shift.

Take it as an easy morning on foot. The old town is compact, so you can stroll the museums, the market and the bazaar at a gentle pace and stop for a rest whenever you like. There are no steep climbs.
Do the museums charge, and are they open every day?
Several museums ring Padang Merdeka, and entry fees and days can vary by site. Some close on certain days or around prayers. We never assume, so check current opening days and any fees locally before you set out.
What is the best way to do this with children?
Go early while it is cool, keep water handy, and let the market be the treat, the colours, the kuih, the friendly traders. Little legs do fine here because everything sits close together.
