Kelantan is compact, and for almost every first visit the answer to “where should I base myself” is simple: central Kota Bharu. Still, it helps to understand the lie of the land, because the right area depends on whether you want to be in the thick of it, near the sea, or out in the quiet. Here is how the state breaks down.
Central Kota Bharu, the obvious base
The city centre is where Kelantan’s daily life and almost all its headline sights are packed into a walkable core. Stay here and you are minutes from Pasar Siti Khadijah, the museum cluster around Istana Jahar, the heritage walk, and the best of the food. It is also the transport hub, so day trips out to the coast, the crafts villages and beyond all start here. For a first trip, look no further.
Towards the coast
A short ride north and west, the land runs out to the South China Sea around Pantai Cahaya Bulan and the fishing settlements near Tumpat. It is calmer and more local out here, lovely for sunsets and sea breeze, though you trade the convenience of the centre for it. Good for a relaxed second base, less ideal as your only one. Remember the sea turns rough in the November to January monsoon.
The crafts edge
Just outside the city, villages like Kampung Penambang are where songket and batik are still made by hand. Most visitors come out for a morning rather than stay, but the surrounding districts give you a quieter, greener feel within easy reach of town.
Further afield
Beyond Kota Bharu, Kelantan opens into paddy country, rivers and the forested interior the jungle railway threads through. These are day-trip and slow-travel territory rather than a first-timer’s base. If the wider state is calling, build out from the city once you have found your feet.
The simple rule
Base yourself in central Kota Bharu, then range out. Distances are short, the centre has the food and the transport, and you lose nothing by using the city as your anchor. Once you know the place, a night or two on the coast or out in the districts is a pleasure, not a gamble. Plan the logistics with our getting around Kelantan guide.
Good to know
Where should I stay in Kelantan?
For a first trip, central Kota Bharu. It puts you within reach of the markets, museums, crafts and food, and everything else in the state is an easy day trip from there.
Is it better to stay near the beach or in town?
Town, for most visitors. The coast is lovely for an afternoon, but Kota Bharu's centre is where the sights, food and transport links are.
