Dining Etiquette in Kelantan

Eating is the heart of a Kelantan trip, and the table has its own gentle etiquette. None of it is intimidating, and locals are delighted when a visitor joins in properly. Here is how to eat well and politely.

Eating with the hand

Many Kelantanese eat with the right hand, especially rice dishes, and you are very welcome to try. The technique is to gather a little rice and curry with the fingertips and use the thumb to push it in. Use the right hand only; the left is traditionally considered unclean. There is always water or a sink to wash before and after. Prefer a spoon and fork? That is completely normal too, with the fork used to push food onto the spoon.

Market and stall manners

Being a guest

If you are lucky enough to be invited to eat in a home, accept graciously. Remove your shoes at the door, wait to be shown where to sit, and let the host begin. Try a bit of everything offered; clearing your plate is a compliment. A small gesture of thanks, and genuine enthusiasm for the food, is the best repayment.
