Nasi dagang: the Kelantan breakfast worth waking up for

Kelantan's morning dish, and why the best stalls sell out before you have finished your coffee.

In much of Malaysia, breakfast is nasi lemak. In Kelantan, the morning belongs to nasi dagang: a deep-coloured glutinous rice steamed in coconut milk, served with a rich tuna curry, gulai ikan tongkol, a little pickled vegetable, and sometimes a boiled egg. It is heavier and sweeter than it looks, and it is built to start a working day.

The catch is timing. The best nasi dagang is cooked in limited batches and sold from small stalls and warungs that open early and close when the pot is empty, often well before noon. Locals know which stall they trust and get there before the queue. If a place is busy at 8am, that is the recommendation.

It pays to come hungry and curious rather than chasing a single famous name. Ask where the rice is steamed fresh that morning, take it with extra gulai, and ease in. Our food guide for newcomers sets the table for the rest of what to try, and the Eat section points you toward the dishes worth a detour.
