Pantai Cahaya Bulan, the Beach of the Shining Moon, sits about ten minutes from the centre of Kota Bharu, and it is where the city goes to slow down in the late afternoon. Do not arrive expecting a resort strip. This is a working coast: casuarina pines, fishing boats drawn up on the sand, simple stalls, families out as the heat softens.
That is the appeal. The light here at dusk is genuinely lovely, and in the drier months the sky fills with wau bulan, the giant moon kites, riding the sea breeze. It is an everyday Kelantan scene rather than a staged one.
