Look closely at a Malaysian fifty-ringgit note and you will find a wau bulan, the moon kite of Kelantan. It rides on the national football jersey too, and it is the logo of the national airline’s loyalty programme. Few regional crafts have travelled so far into the idea of the country itself.
The name describes the shape: a broad crescent at the tail that, in silhouette against the sky, reads as a rising moon. The body is cut with fine floral and leaf motifs and painted in confident colour. A large wau is taller than the person who flies it, and getting one airborne and stable is a skill passed down rather than picked up in an afternoon.
