If you hear a hall in Kelantan erupt in unison clapping and a roar of voices, you have probably found dikir barat. It is the state’s best-loved performance art: groups seated cross-legged, led by a tukang karut who improvises sharp, often funny verse, with the whole group answering back in rhythm and a percussion line driving underneath.
What makes it special is that it is live and quick on its feet. The lyrics comment on the day, trade wit, and sometimes carry a gentle message, and the audience is part of the engine, clapping and answering along. It is competitive too, with groups facing off and crowds picking sides.
The easiest place for a visitor to catch it is the Gelanggang Seni, the Cultural Centre in Kota Bharu, which runs regular demonstrations of Kelantan’s traditional arts. Times and details are on the Gelanggang Seni page, with more on the Events listing.
