Wayang kulit is one of Kelantan’s oldest stage arts, a form of theatre told entirely in shadow. Behind a stretched white screen lit from behind, a single master — the Tok Dalang — moves intricately cut leather puppets, voices every character, narrates the story, and cues the small ensemble of drums and gongs that accompanies him. It is a demanding craft, traditionally learned over many years of apprenticeship.
The puppets themselves are works of art. Each is cut and chiselled from treated hide, pierced with fine lattice patterns that throw delicate shadows, painted, and mounted on horn or bamboo rods. A full set runs to dozens of figures, and a skilled dalang knows the voice and movement of every one. The shadows, the lamplight, the layered percussion, and the dalang’s narration in the soft Kelantanese dialect combine into something hypnotic, even when you cannot follow every line.
Today wayang kulit is presented chiefly as heritage — a living art kept alive by a small number of dedicated practitioners and cultural institutions. You can see demonstration shows during the cultural season at Gelanggang Seni, with longer staged performances mounted at the bigger festivals.
