Silat is the Malay martial art, and in Kelantan it is as much performance as combat: a flowing, almost dance-like display of stances, strikes and bladework, set to the pulse of drum and gong. It has deep roots here, woven into weddings, ceremonies and the cultural calendar.
The easiest place for a visitor to see it is the Gelanggang Seni cultural arena in Kota Bharu, where silat features in the rotating programme of traditional arts. You may also catch it, unannounced and at its most alive, at a village wedding.
Practical notes: Demonstrations run mainly in the drier months at the cultural arena, days vary, so confirm the current schedule locally. Dress modestly and ask before photographing performers up close.
