Flying is how most visitors arrive. Sultan Ismail Petra Airport (KBR) sits just outside Kota Bharu, with frequent short hops from Kuala Lumpur and other hubs. From the runway it is a quick ride into the city centre, the base for almost any first trip. If your time is limited, this is the answer, full stop.
By rail (the beautiful way)
For travellers who treat the journey as part of the holiday, the East Coast Line, affectionately the jungle railway, is a quiet classic. It threads through the forested interior of the peninsula and up toward Tumpat, near Kota Bharu, passing rubber and oil palm, deep green country and small-town stations at a gentle, old-fashioned pace. It is slow, it is local, and it is gorgeous.
By road (the long haul)
You can drive, but know what you are signing up for: roughly seven to eight hours from Kuala Lumpur across the peninsula. The East Coast Expressway has shortened the trip, and the drive through the centre of the country has its own appeal, but it is a commitment. Worth it for road-trippers; overkill for a short visit.
