Merdeka Day (National Day)

Merdeka Day, Malaysia’s National Day, marks the country’s independence in 1957 and is celebrated nationwide on the 31st of August. In Kelantan, the day brings out flags and decorations across Kota Bharu, with public buildings, shops, and homes dressed in the national colours.

The mood is patriotic and community-minded, with parades, gatherings, and events held in the city. For a visitor, it is a good day to feel the national spirit in a state with a strong identity of its own, and to see Kota Bharu at its most festive and flag-filled.

Practical notes: This is a national public holiday, so expect some closures and busy public spaces. Parades and events centre on Kota Bharu; check locally for timings and any road closures. Free to join the public celebrations.
