Kelantan is Malaysia’s craft heartland, and through the year its makers gather at fairs to show and sell their work: hand-woven songket shot with gold thread, bold Kelantan batik, fine silverwork and carved wood, often with the artisans demonstrating their craft on the spot.
These fairs are the best chance to buy directly from the people who made the piece, at fair prices, and to watch techniques that take years to master. The Handicraft Village in Kota Bharu is a year-round anchor; larger fairs cluster around festival and tourism seasons.
