Kampung Penambang sits just outside Kota Bharu town and has been Kelantan’s centre of songket weaving for generations. On Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, several family workshops open their doors to visitors, and you can sit beside the weaver and watch the shuttle pass — gold thread locked into silk in a pattern that might take weeks to complete.
Songket is not fast work. A single length of cloth for a baju kurung can require a month of daily weaving, with every gold thread placed by hand on a traditional back-strap or floor loom. The weavers here learned from their mothers, who learned from theirs, and the motifs — lotus flowers, diagonal diamonds, the geometric patterns named after natural forms — carry that lineage in every row. Watching the process is a lesson in patience and precision that no photograph captures.
For visitors who want to do more than observe, some workshops offer short hands-on sessions: you sit at the loom, take the shuttle, and attempt even a few passes under the weaver’s patient guidance. The result is a small square of cloth that took you ten minutes and the weaver would have done in thirty seconds, but it is yours and you will understand the craft differently for having tried it.
Practical notes: A small fee applies for the hands-on sessions (typically RM 20–50 depending on the workshop and activity). Observation is often free.
