Persembahan Mak Yong

Mak Yong is one of the great treasures of Malay culture, and Kelantan is its home. A centuries-old form of dance-drama, it blends graceful, stylised movement, live music, romance and ancient story, traditionally led by a female cast. In 2005 it was recognised by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, a rare honour for a regional art form.

For a visitor, catching Mak Yong is a window into the refined court arts of the old northeast. Performances are occasional rather than nightly: look for them at cultural festivals, heritage showcases and special programmes at the Gelanggang Seni cultural centre.

Practical notes: Mak Yong is performed in a heritage and festival context, so check what is on during your visit on our events page. Dress modestly, and arrive early for a good view.
