Dikir barat is Kelantan’s signature sound, and competition is where it burns brightest. Two groups sit cross-legged, each led by a sharp-tongued tukang karut who improvises witty, often topical verse, while the rest answer back in thundering unison and a percussion line drives it all forward. The crowd is part of the act, clapping along and picking sides.
Competitive dikir barat draws big, lively audiences and is broadcast on local media; for a visitor it is one of the most energetic and distinctly Kelantanese nights out you can have.
