One of the quieter passions of the east coast, bird-singing is taken seriously in Kelantan. On weekend mornings, owners hoist their caged merbok (zebra doves) and other songbirds high on tall poles, and judges move between them scoring the birds on the tone, rhythm and length of their call.
It is part hobby, part sport, part social ritual, prized birds change hands for remarkable sums, and the gatherings draw devoted regulars. For a visitor it is a window into a gentle, distinctly local world: the murmur of the crowd, the poles against the sky, and the layered song drifting over a field in the cool of the morning.
Practical notes: Gatherings are informal and seasonal, busiest in the drier months and on weekends. Ask locally for the nearest arena, dress modestly, and keep noise down so the birds perform.
